Well, let me tell you, as someone who has dedicated their entire life to achieving the gold medal and experienced the bitter taste of defeat, nobody likes losing.
Don't get me wrong, winning isn't everything, and we'll discuss that later. But when you pour your heart and soul into something, only to lose to the competition, it feels like a swift kick to the gut—a tough pill to swallow.

As a hockey player, coach, and entrepreneur, I've encountered my fair share of losses. It's painful, no doubt about it. However, I've never allowed those losses to define me, my team, or my children. Instead, I've embraced each setback as an invaluable lesson in disguise.
The best leaders I've had the privilege of working with can objectively evaluate what's working well and their challenges. They set their egos aside, view crises as opportunities, and constantly seek ways to turn setbacks into stepping stones for growth.
As a hockey player and coach, I've learned that losses can be transformed into valuable lessons. Great leaders don't shy away from problems; they embrace them. They analyse their team's performance, strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
Putting ego aside, they are willing to admit when they've made mistakes. This vulnerability builds trust and inspires loyalty. It makes them stronger leaders.
Let's be clear: in elite sports, winning is everything. As a head coach or a team, you're measured by your ability to secure victory. The same principle applies to high-growth businesses. Whether you aim to sell your business, achieve an acquisition, or become a dominant player in the industry, winning becomes your ultimate goal. As a business owner, you must define what winning means and rally your team to believe it is possible.
Meaningful goals are the driving force behind exceptional achievements. They eliminate the need for vague vision statements and meaningless aspirations. Just like in elite sports, where the objective is crystal clear—winning the gold medal, the league, or the championship—a business must establish a goal that evokes excitement and a touch of fear. It should challenge the boundaries of what seems possible.
But setting a meaningful goal is only the first step. It's equally important to consider who will benefit from achieving that goal. When purpose becomes the driving force, people become deeply invested. I've experienced this firsthand with the British team.
Winning the gold medal and ascending to the top meant more than personal achievements. It meant inspiring a whole generation of players in the UK.
It meant proving that British hockey could compete against powerhouses like the USA, Canada, the Czech Republic, and Sweden. The impact of achieving that meaningful goal reached far beyond individual aspirations—it became a cause worth fighting for.
As a business owner, you must ask yourself how your team's efforts contribute to society and how they make a difference in the lives of your customers, clients, and the wider community.
Recognising that your organisation's success positively impacts others will motivate you to do more, constantly evolve and become a better leader, and elevate your business to new heights.
